chancellor of the asian university for women
Cherie Blair, founder of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, is a leading international human rights lawyer, a passionate campaigner for women’s equality, and wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. As Chancellor of AUW, Mrs. Blair is a firm believer in the transformative power of education.
Mrs. Blair was the first member of her family to go to university. She studied law at the London School of Economics, where she graduated with a First Class Degree. In 1995, she became a Queen’s Counsel, and in 2000 she became a founding member of Matrix Chambers, a groundbreaking legal practice designed to break down the barriers between providers of legal services.
For decades, Mrs. Blair has actively campaigned for human rights causes and equality for women. She is closely involved with a number of charities around the world with a special emphasis on those working with women and children. In 2008, she established the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, which partners with global organizations to support women entrepreneurs in the developing world (www.cherieblairfoundation.org). When her autobiography Speaking for Myself was published the same year, she also became a bestselling author.
Mrs. Blair believes strongly in the need to train underserved young women to become catalysts for change in their societies, a belief that lies at the core of AUW’s mission. She joined AUW’s Council of Patrons in 2008. In January of 2010, Mrs. Blair went to Chittagong to launch the Cherie Blair Fellowships at AUW. In January 2011, she was appointed Chancellor of the Asian University for Women.
