Internship Opportunities
Campus Planning and Development
The Asian University for Women’s first program, the Access Academy, is a one-year, residential, pre-collegiate preparatory program, opening this April in leased facilities in downtown Chittagong. The University’s first undergraduate class is scheduled to begin in September 2009. The undergraduate program will also open in leased facilities in downtown Chittagong, while the University’s permanent campus is being designed and built.
The Government of Bangladesh has generously donated 104 acres of land to the AUW for development of the University’s permanent campus. The site is located approximately 5 miles from downtown Chittagong and is mostly undeveloped. The site is idyllic, defined by lush rolling hills and valleys, with views of the Bay of Bengal and downtown Chittagong, but it is also a challenging site to develop given the difficult terrain, soils vulnerable to erosion, and annual monsoon rains. The AUWSF has vowed to develop this site as a model of environmental sustainability, from design through construction and operation.
Renowned architect Moshe Safdie and his design team have recently completed the University’s campus master plan, which will accommodate 2,750 students in approximately 2,300,000 GSF of built space at completion. Development of the campus is broken down into three distinct phases. At this time AUWSF team is transitioning into the start of phase 1 design, which will progress in parallel with our fundraising initiative. Our immediate work program includes further geotechnical, hydrological and seismic testing and modeling; commissioning of an architectural topographic site survey; preparation of preliminary construction cost estimates and schedule projections; pre-qualification and engagement of a construction management team; development of an early site work package; preliminary utilities infrastructure work; environmental impact assessment and permitting; and continued refinement of the campus master plan.
Internship Details:
AUWSF is an exciting and challenging place to work. As part of a start-up organization, our staff and interns have the unique opportunity to work directly with senior management, consultants and experts on a broad range of projects and tasks. AUWSF is a collaborative environment where ideas are welcome and openly shared.
Duties: David Burson AIA, Vice President for Campus Planning and Development, and Katrina Kazda, Program Manager for Operations and Planning, seek a creative, resourceful and hardworking intern to assist in a large variety of tasks in support of campus planning and development. Sample tasks include: planning and design coordination and assistance, research, writing (letters, proposals, memorandums, TOR’s, RFP’s etc), document review and editing, filing, copying/printing, meeting documentation, invoice processing, and event planning, as well as participation in design reviews, team meetings, etc.
Schedule: We currently seek an intern for 16-20 hours per week. Days/times (between 9:00am and 6:00 P.M) are flexible.
Qualifications: Though all interested applicants are welcome to apply, priority will be given to current students or recent graduates of an accredited university Architecture and/or Planning degree program, with prior working experience in an office environment. A demonstrated commitment to sustainable facility and campus planning and design will be a consideration. Interest in/knowledge of South Asia and women’s education is desirable but not necessary. Strong written and verbal communications skills will be required. This opportunity has potential to become a permanent position for the appropriately-qualified candidate.
Application requirements
Your application must include a cover letter, resume, and at least two references. For non-US citizens we’ll need proof of a valid work permit from the US Department of Immigration. All application material will become the property of the Asian University for Women Support Foundation upon receipt.
Federal work-study supported students are preferred.
