An institution that at its peak will have only 2,500 students does not, on its face, seem likely to change the overwhelming odds against women in Asia today. I believe the power of numbers is overshadowed by the power of example and an inspiration to lead.

Mission & Vision

Higher education for women is a crucial element in the political, economic and social progress of the region.

The mission of the Asian University for Women springs from the need to redress existing disparities in educational opportunities. In much of the developing world, girls and women often face unequal treatment and face limited access to education in comparison to their male counterparts. These inequalities increase significantly at higher levels of education, where women from rural, poor and marginalized populations are particularly disadvantaged. Yet women have a powerful influence on the lives of their children and families, and help create a culture of justice, progress and achievement across society.

While advances have been made in primary and secondary education for women, it is higher education that can make the most profound difference to a nation. Higher education is the catalyst for leadership. The Asian University for Women (AUW) is founded on the vision of empowering and training women for leadership roles, so that they may have a lasting influence their communities, their countries, and the region.

The Asian University for Women—its mission, program, and long-term goals— focuses on being a catalyst for positive change in the developing world. AUW aspires to establish itself as a truly regional institution: a model center of excellence, capturing the best practices in educational standards and institutional management. The University, international in reach, will serve as a beacon for those striving to raise educational standards, increase opportunities for women, and promote regional cooperation and understanding among the people of Asia and beyond. AUW will serve as a paradigm for exceptional institutions of higher education through innovation in curriculum and in governance structure, a steadfast commitment to secure talent irrespective of socioeconomic background, and by providing financial support for all those young women who need and deserve it.
