On May 18, 2013, the Asian University for Women graduated its first class of 134 undergraduates. An important milestone for the University, the first Commencement ceremony included remarks by guest speaker Ms. Marina Mahathir, Malaysian writer, blogger, and activist and member of AUW’s International Council of Advisors. The ceremony was held at the Chittagong Boat Club, in Chittagong, Bangladesh.
AUW’s first graduation marks the culmination of years of hard work by students, faculty, administrators, and supporters. After graduation, students plan to attend graduate school in fields as diverse as business, computer science, development studies, environmental science, and urban planning. Some plan to start their own enterprises or non-governmental organizations, or obtain their first jobs. Students have already been accepted to graduate programs at Oxford University and the UN University of Peace, and jobs at companies such as Chevron Bangladesh. Many will remain at AUW this summer to attend a post-graduate leadership training program on campus before embarking on their careers and other pursuits.
