AUW’s Support Network Expands to South Korea
The Asian University for Women’s global support network has extended into South Korea with a dinner honoring the University’s Chancellor, Mrs. Cherie Blair. The event was support by the Harvard-Yale Club of Korea, and was, held in Seoul at the Millennium Hilton Hotel. More than 130 guests attended the dinner, which featured Chancellor Cherie Blair with AUW’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. Fahima Aziz, and the Chairman of AUW’s Support Foundation, Mr. Young Joon Kim.
While in Korea, the delegation from AUW also formalized agreements with Ewha Womans University and the Export-Import Bank of Korea. AUW will enter into a student and faculty exchange program with Ewha, which is located in Seoul and is the world’s largest female educational institute. The exchange program will allow AUW students to experience life in a different country within the region and gain a broader perspective, and the visiting students from Ewha will likewise contribute to the diversity of AUW’s campus community. Selected AUW graduates will also be considered for post-graduate study and scholarships at Ewha through the Ewha Global Partnership Program. Many students at AUW plan to pursue post-graduate degrees, and this partnership will provide exciting opportunities for them.
AUW will also partner with the Export-Import Bank of Korea (also known as Korea EximBank) for an internship program. Korea EximBank will host AUW students as summer interns and will generously provide stipends to cover the costs associated with internships, such as travel and housing. These initial events and partnerships with major Korean institutions mark an important step for AUW in the process of making the University a self-sustaining entity supported by the people of Asia.
Mrs. Blair was interviewed by several media outlets, including Korea’s Joongang Daily. To read The Joongang Daily’s piece on Mrs. Blair, please click here.

Social Science Research Project in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Fourth-year AUW students Sorya Seang and Samoy Hour presented the results of their social science research project at an international conference in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on September 29, 2012. Presenting their work alongside professional academics and NGO employees was an honor for these undergraduates, who were representing a research team of eight AUW students. The group took on an extremely ambitious research project with the support of their advisors, Professor Sara Amin, Professor Faheem Hussain and former AUW faculty, Professor Agnes Khoo and Professor Sharon Doetsch-Kidder. The students spent two summers conducting a social science research project exploring the attitudes of Cambodian secondary school students toward education, academic integrity, leadership, and creativity. Based on their own experiences with higher education at AUW and secondary education in Cambodia, they decided to look more deeply into attitudes toward education in their home country. They surveyed 1200 students from grades 7-9, and also conducted workshops on leadership and creativity, which were eagerly attended by the participants. The resulting paper has been selected for publication in the International Proceedings of Economic Development and Research: Humanities, Historical and Social Sciences.
