the inaugural class

The pioneering students of the AUW Access Academy, beginning classes in Chittagong in April 2008, represent a diverse group of talented young women. Students are coming from Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

I became involved with the AUW initiative because it fulfills four areas of intense personal interest for meeducation, diversity, development and Asia. By providing women across the Asia region with an opportunity for higher education, I firmly believe this will pave the way for more open societies and open minds

The development of the University is being guided by an international network of proven leaders in the educational, financial, and developmental sectors. The Asian University for Women Support Foundation (AUWSF), incorporated as a non-profit organization based in the United States, serves as the principal planning and fundraising organization for this effort.

AUW is pleased to announce the launch of the Access Academy—a preparatory program for entrance into AUW for women from underprivileged backgrounds. The Access Academy is the first program at AUW. Its opening, its students and its programs define a very important milestone in the University’s history—it is the first manifestation of the AUW vision.

The Access Academy commenced in April 2008 with an inaugural class of 130 students. Senior academic and administrative appointments for the Academy were made in summer 2007, and student recruitment efforts began immediately thereafter. AUW has leased and outfitted space in Chittagong to house the Academy’s residential and academic facilities until construction of the permanent campus is complete.
